OVERALL EVALUATION :: Although driver and passenger air bags were fitted, the protection from serious head injury in the full frontal crash test was poor.
The offset crash test resulted in substantial intrusion into the driver's floor space, which meant poor protection from leg injury.
SAFETY FEATURES :: Dual air bags (driver and passenger) are standard equipment on all models. Dual air bags were fitted to both test vehicles.
The front seat belts have height-adjustable upper anchorages. This feature improves the fit of the seat belt.
Seat belt pre-tensioners are provided for the front seat belts; these improve seat belt performance.
The Barina is the only vehicle in this group with acceptable head restraint design.
RESTRAINTS :: Full Frontal Crash Test :: The seat belts allowed the occupants to move forward in their seats a moderate amount.
The occupants were then cushioned by the air bags. Both occupants recorded high head injury measurements when they hit the air bags.
The driver's knees hit the lower dash, fuse box and cover of the steering column. The passenger's knees hit the glove box.
Offset Crash Test :: The seat belts allowed the occupants to move forward in their seats a moderate amount.
The occupants were then cushioned by the air bags. The driver's head slid off the right side of the air bag and then twisted so it was facing the rear, and hit the top of the dash.
The driver's knees hit the lower dash. The passenger's knees struck the glove box and dash.During rebound the driver's head came partially out of the window, and struck the window sill.
STRUCTURE :: Full Frontal Crash Test :: The passenger compartment held it's shape reasonably well in the full frontal crash.
At the height of the crash, the steering column moved rearwards and upwards, but then returned to near it's original location. The floor space on both the driver and passenger sides was moderately deformed.
All doors remained closed during the crash. The driver's doorway opening shortened by 2 cm. After the crash the front doors could be opended by hand but were stiff.
Offset Crash Test :: The front part of the driver's floor was pushed rearwards 23cm
The dash and the steering column were pushed 12 cm towards the occupants.
The steering column and airbag moved o the left, allowing the driver's head to slide off the right side of the airbag. The roof on the driver's side was buckled upwards and the width of the doorway shortened by 16 cm.
All doors remained closed during the crash. After the crash a hacksaw was required to open the driver's door, and the left foot was trapped under the pedals.
